Intrusion alarm system
a security system is a network of integrated devices and components that work together to monitor suspicious activity and notify the homeowner of a potential break-in. The devices are connected to a control panel which is the hub of the system where the main functions are located.
The foundation of every good security alarm system is the selection of the right control panel equipment which is integral to all the operational and communications features which form the heart of your whole security system. Selection of the right security control equipment requires the identification of the following essential parameters:
The size or how many zone inputs are required for the premises which normally comes in multiples zone inputs and it’s important to allow spare inputs or select an expandable system to ensure it can meet any future needs you may have.
- The control panel (controls every device installed on your property)
- Motion detectors
- Door and window sensors
- Wireless/wired security cameras
- Loud alarms
The Components:
Control Panel
To begin, every intrusion alarm system is equipped with its brain, the control panel. The control panel is typically located in an electrical room, telephone room, or another secure area of the building unless it’s built into a keypad. Almost all of the devices that are connected to an intrusion system can be connected to the control panel by wired or wireless communication.
Keypads
Most alarm systems have some form of keypad, which is used to turn the system on and off, this is also known as arming and disarming. The keypad isn’t the brain of the system it’s simply how you interact with it.
The keypad activates and deactivates certain devices that are connected to the security alarm system. These devices include things such as door contacts, motion detectors, glass break detectors, or any other device which may be securing your building.
Motion Sensors
Motions sensors will detect movement within your facility and trigger the alarm consequently. There are many types of motion sensors. Here we take a look at infrared, microwave, and ultrasonic sensors.
Infrared Sensors (or IR Sensors)
Infrared sensors are components that work with infrared radiation to analyze their surroundings. There are two types of infrared sensors: active infrared sensors and passive infrared sensors (PIR). The IR that are normally used within residential and commercial security are the passive ones. Infrared sensors work with temperature, using infrared radiations to measure the temperature of the objects in a room.
Detection Devices
Detection devices are the components used to detect the entry of an intruder into the building. There are dozens of different types of detection devices, each of which uses a different method of detecting the presence of an intruder. The most commonly used types of detection devices at commercial facilities are:
Contact Switches
Contact switches are installed on doors and windows to detect when the door or window has been opened. Contact switches are most commonly installed on doors and opening windows on the exterior of the building, but may also be installed on interior doors. There are a wide variety of different types of contact switches available for installation on wood and metal doors, windows, gates, hatches, and other types of openings.
